A 9-foot alligator attacked and seriously injured a man riding a bicycle along a nature trail in Florida at around 11 a.m. Monday, officials said.

The Martin County Sheriff’s Office said the incident happened along a trail at Halpatiokee Park.

The bicyclist lost control of his bike, fell into a body of water, and was bit by a large female alligator.

Officials said that the man was lucky enough to break free and crawl to an area where a bystander could help him up.

Rescue workers drove the unidentified man to a waiting medical helicopter a mile away.

A professional trapper later captured the alligator.
