According to hospital officials, a neonatal intensive care nurse in Florida has been fired after posting photos of a newborn with a birth defect on her Instagram account.
On her Instagram account, Sierra Samuels shared pictures she illegally took of a baby with gastroschisis — a congenital malformation that causes the protrusion of the intestines from the body.
Samuels was immediately placed on administrative leave by hospital officials pending an investigation and was consequently fired after that.
The unauthorized posting of patients’ photos violates the HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act), which was enacted to protect the leaking of medical records and health information without consent.
