“Lucca saved my life on multiple occasions,” retired Marine Master Sergeant Chris Willingham said during the burial ceremony for 14-year-old German Shepherd Lucca.

Lucca was a war dog who served more than 400 missions in the Middle East.

In 2016, Lucca was the first working dog in the military awarded the Dickin Medal, the highest honor bestowed on a military service animal.

An explosive device went off on Lucca’s last patrol in Afghanistan, and her leg had to be amputated.

Lucca finally succumbed to old age. But while her heroics might have come to an end, hundreds of Americans came to celebrate her life and pay their respects at the Michigan War Dog Memorial as fellow dogs of war walked in formation to honor their fallen comrade.

Lucca, the German Shephard, is gone but not forgotten.
