43-year-old Andy Coyle Jr. from Gaffney, South Carolina, was killed Tuesday morning while trying to save his dog, who sat down in the middle of the train tracks near River Drive and refused to move.

Both were killed instantly after being struck by an oncoming freight train, according to the Cherokee County Coroner’s Office.

Train video footage showed Coyle trying to move his dog, who was sitting in the middle of the train tracks when both were struck.

The Norfolk-Southern train had three engines and 34 cars and was going from Atlanta to Rutherford, Pennsylvania, The State newspaper reported.
