The Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds (SANCOB) said that a swarm of bees killed 63 endangered African penguins outside Cape Town.

David Roberts, a clinical veterinarian for the foundation, said that bee stings had been found around the penguin’s eyes after extensive tests.

“This is a rare occurrence,” Roberts told AFP.

The South African National Parks took the dead birds to the foundation for toxicology and disease examinations.

Post-mortem testings showed the African penguins having multiple bee stings.

African penguins are on the endangered species list of the International Union for Conservation of Nature.
