Paramedics from the Queensland Ambulance Service were called to Holland Park West in Brisbane on Sunday at around 12:05 pm.
According to 9News Australia, an angry magpie swooped, causing 5-month old Mia’s mother, Simone, to instinctively duck, but in the process, she tripped and fell forward with her baby in her hands.
The small child was rushed to the Queensland Children Hospital with severe head injuries but tragically died later, according to local reports.
Magpies are notorious for aggressively swooping at perceived threats to their nests during the breeding season, from June to December.
Magpies are a protected species in Australia.
The magpie was removed from the area, and a full investigation is ongoing, according to Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner.
The loss of five month old Mia, in such tragic circumstances, is something that has shocked our community to the absolute core.

Mia’s father Jacob told the Daily Mail Australia that his daughter
“brought joy to everyone with her smile, innocence, and her laugh.”
“The pain we are experiencing is unimaginable. Our world was taken from us,” he added.
